O.I. Fives v Old Edwardians Ipswich
Report by Peter Boughton
Burnell and P Boughton at first pair lost to Friend and Bunyan 11:13, 9:12, 6:12. Lots of long rallies, mostly finished unfortunately by the Eds winning the point. Courtney on inspirational form, oblivious of the problem of the sun reflecting on the sight screens and seeming able to get the ball up no matter where he flicked an arm out to - he just kept laughing! OIs cause not helped by Steve injuring his groin trying to get to yet another at the back that took an unexpected trajectory after bouncing.
Won second pair, Will Gibbons & Boughton E v Res Malik and Nigel Cox 10:13, 12:6, 12:9, 12:10
Gibbons, as he had promised beforehand, was hungover, so all was well.
All therefore hinged on the third pair with Alex Dunlavey making a welcome return and Ahrandeep Aujla from the School making what I think was his first appearance in OI colours, playing against Scholeys Pete and George. Went to 2;2, set at 10:10 in the fifth. We got two points ahead then managed to lose the next five. Full scores 12:9, 13:12, 3:12, 7:12, 12:15
So a pretty close match, very enjoyable ( if tinged with frustration) and a full session in the Greyhound afterwards. Fives like it should be!

Special September Evening!
We are lined up a very special evening for our 40's and 50's reunion which coincides with the book launch of Ipswich School - A History in Photographs
by John Blatchly and Stuart Grimwade
Friday 25th September 2009
6.30 – 8.30pm
All OIs and partners are welcome to come along but we particularly hope to see a good turnout from those of you that left between 1940 and 1960.
This will be a very special evening as not only is this an opportunity to connect with your former colleagues, we have also arranged for the evening to coincide with a special book launch. John Blatchly and Stuart Grimwade have very recently finished writing the book and the authors have very kindly agreed to introduce it. Ipswich School - A History in Photographs illustrates some of the best photographs in the school archive and museum collections from the 1850s to the 1980s and briefly to the present day.
The authors' talks are always fascinating and you will have an excellent opportunity to be the first to see and purchase copies of the new book, a sequel to A Famous Antient Seed-Plot of Learning.
The evening will start at 6.30pm when there will be the opportunity to enjoy the free bar and a buffet followed by the talk at approximately 7.00pm. There will plenty of time after the talk to catch up with friends whilst enjoying another drink from the bar!
This will be an extremely enjoyable and interesting evening and we hope you will be able to join us.
If you could let us know if you are able to make it this will help with catering so please email oldipswichians@ipswich.suffolk.sch.uk or telephone Carole Day on 01473 298961.

As a first step, a number of OIs gathered at the school's courts on the evening of Thursday 6 November and it is hoped that the numbers interested in playing on a semi-informal basis will continue to grow.
The group meets every other Thursday for 2 hours at the school's courts.
Dates for December and New Year:
Thursday 4th December
Thursday 18th December
Thursday 15 January
thereafter every other Thursday
Anyone interested in joining in, regardless of level, is invited to contact the OI organiser for the Squash initiative Pierson Broome - he can be reached via his e-Mail address pierson.broome@yahoo.com or on 07734-702251 alternatively contact the OI programme organiser Carole Day 01473 298961 oldipswichians@ipswich.suffolk.sch.uk.

OI Ladies Fives v Cambridge University
OI Ladies Fives Match v Cambridge University
Congratulations to Annabel Griffiths, both on becoming Cambridge University’s Captain of Ladies Eton Fives and, with Eleanor Ward, on winning the first OI Ladies fives match. For the match at Ipswich on Saturday November 8th Annabel temporarily forsook her Cambridge allegiance to defeat the University by three games to nil. She will however be donning the light blue for the University Fives Championships to be held at Highgate School on 15th November and we wish her good luck for that.

5th Reunion - 13th September 2008
Class of 2003 reunion.
The Pavilion, Ipswich School. 13th September 2008
Five years after we left, it was time for the class of 2003 to return to Ipswich school for our reunion. In those five years, much has happened and it seems many of our year have moved onto bigger and better things that have taken them away from Ipswich. However, in spite of many OIs unable to make it back for the reunion, twenty five OIs from our year made the effort to return to Ipswich for the weekend. It was a perfect event was great to catch up on all the gossip in the post-university era most of us are now in and to hear what everyone was up to. The event continued into Ipswich, returning to some of our old haunts from the sixth form. We’d like to thank the OIs for providing the food and drinks for the evening and special thanks to Graham, Kurt and John form the committee for coming along to help the event run smoothly.

Fives Centenary Celebrations
A dinner was held in the school dining hall last evening to celebrate a Centenary of Fives at Ipswich. Friends from the Eton Fives world and the Eton Fives Association joined Old Boys, pupils, staff and governors to celebrate the centenary of the Courts which were built in 1908 during the Headmastership of A K Watson Old Harrovian.
President and Founder of the O.I. Eton Fives Club, Mike Fenn, was in the Chair and welcomed the guests. The Headmaster, Mr Ian Galbraith, proposed the toast to: Our guests and former Headmaster A K Watson, initiator of the game of Eton Fives at Ipswich. The Chairman of the Eton Fives Association, Mr Richard Barber OBE, responded on behalf of the guests and the Association
Earlier in the day the granddaughters of A K Watson unveiled a Centenary Plaque to commemorate the founding of the courts by their Grandfather. The ceremony included the naming of the the three courts after Arthur Watson (founder), Martin Shortland-Jones (former member of staff and responsible for the restoration of the courts in 1955) and Mike Fenn (founder of the Old Ipswichian Eton Fives Club in 1966). Peter Boughton (Bursar) introduced proceedings with a brief outine of Fives at Ipswich and background to naming of the courts. Mike Fenn responded on behalf of those being honoured. Anne Shortland-Jones was in attendance.
Following the formal unveiling ceremony a Centenary Match between an A K Watson XII and Headmaster of Bury St Edmunds' XII, the first matching in 1908 having been played between A K Watson and the Headmaster of King Edward's Bury St Edmunds and a members of their staff. The Headmaster commenced the match by throwing the first ball. Unlike 1908 the Bury St Edmunds Staff triumphed 4-2.

Coded Stonex - Latin learning under assumed names
Norman Stonex’s Latin names for all his pupils have stuck in your minds and struck a chord, in some cases for over 70 years.
This all began with Edric Worsnop’s autobiographical Vorsinoporix Chronicle which opens with a description of his first encounter and naming (at school 40-48). In answer to an appeal for the latinised form of your names, and those of your classmates which you can recall, has produced a splendid crop of responses, which I hope to make into a short article in my archive section in the next Old Ipswichian magazine.
This message is merely to thank all nine of you who written so far, some including whole form lists with aliases:
Tim Barr 46-54, Brian Fox 39-45, Bryan Frost 59-, Peter Goymour 35-41, John Ireland 52-61, John Neave 43-52, Gordon Prichatt 36-40, Paul Richards 35-41, Paul St John Turner 58-68, John Westmacott 53-59.
Over the period 1935 to 1968 at least then he continued to enjoy the joke. I suspect that had he been called Stone or Stonham he might never have thought ot it. The earliest glimpse of him as a master was in the 1930 Wolsey Pageant in Christchurch Park whn he played Charles Brandon, duke of Suffolk. The whole group appeared in a recent OI Magazine with NS indicated. We have a large collection of postcards addressed over a similarly long period, the earliest from his mother to Master N Stonex.

Any Wisden Alkmanacks out there?
IPSWICH SCHOOL IN WISDEN
To qualify for the Public Schools Cricket section, the school had to be totally independent, which only happened in 1945. Perhaps cricket was strong under Truman Tanqueray, but he neglected to apply for our year summary and statistics to appear.
PHFM arrived in September 1950 and lost no time in securing the school’s rightful entry. His first season’s excellent results, summer 1951, appeared in the 1952 edition, and they have done so ever since.
The school’s collection of Wisden Alkmanacks has been taken into the Museum in its existing bookcase, and an extra shelf has been requested for the cupboard at the bottom so that a long run can be properly arranged chronologically.
Apart from an odd 1929 edition, our run begins in earnest in 1947 and must now be completed to date and maintained so.
We have five duplicates which can be part-exchanged for missing volumes:
1947, 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1952.
Gaps in the run beginning in 1947 are the following:
1956, 1957, 1958, 1965, 1976, 1979, 1981, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993-6 and 1998 to date.
If anyone could spare one of those missing years we would be most grateful.

Year Rep Programme
Old Ipswichian Year Reps
A big thank you to the many Old Ipswichians who have agreed to act as ‘Year Reps’ for their years. They have been instrumental in helping the Old Ipswichian Club Committee and Development Office to run the expanding reunion programme for the Old Ipswichians. The Development Office provides the administrative and logistical support for the Year reunions with the Year Reps helping to spread the word of their Year reunion amongst colleagues. They also provide invaluable support at the event itself as the host.
Are you interested in becoming a Year Rep? More than 30 new Year Reps have offered their help via the OI questionnaire which is fantastic. Should you be willing to be a Year Rep or wish to find out more about the role, please contact me on gnp@ipswich.suffolk.sch.uk or 01473 298 964.

The Ipswich Fives Tournament and Dinner
Last weekend twenty-four O.I.'s, pupils and guests attended the Graves Fives Tournament on the Ipswich Courts. A similar number enjoyed an excellent meal held in the Pavilion on the Saturday evening. Much Fives was enjoyed by those taking part but I fear the 'oldies' may take a day or two to recover. It was good to see the standard of the pupils improve over the weekend as they gained in confidence playing, many for the first time, in a competitive environment. The weekend owed its success to the admirable organising ability of Peter Boughton. Results:
Semi-Finals:
T Gregory & J Caudle beat A Yusaf & M Fenn
12-5, 12-4
S Woolfries & O Watts beat beat S Burnell & J Hicks
8-12, 12-4, 12-7
Final:
T Gregory & J Caudle beat S Woolfries & O Watts
12-6, 12-7, 12-10
Plate A Final:
M Graves & A Watson beat P Boughton & H Fletcher
13-10, 12-13, 13-11
Plate B Final: W Gibbons & A Watson beat C Wilson & E Ward
15-13

New Morfey Rooms Opened
On 31 August 2007 over sixty guests, including Gill Morfey and his sister, were entertained in the new Sixth Form Centre (former Preparatory School, 'The Gables' of the Notcutt family from 1858).
A selection of some of the finest early photographs had been put on to a Powerpoint loop by Stuart Grimwade, and John Blatchly, Hon. Archivist, produced a selection of items to demonstrate the great variety of the school’s collections.
Everyone enjoyed Paul Brown’s brilliant soundtrack to his silent film The Window Cleaner (1976), and then it was time for Bob Wyatt to speak and open the new Rooms. He recalled the things he most and least enjoyed about the school, but it gave him a lifelong love of books and much pride in the school.
To mark the event he presented an original watercolour by Edward Ardizzone OI to the collection of works by Ipswichian artists. It shows people changing on the beach below cliffs, perhaps at Lulworth Cove or Durdle Dore in Dorset. A new brass plaque will record his gift and the occasion.
After the headmaster had thanked everyone involved, the party divided between those who saw the Morfey Rooms first or toured the splendidly refurbished centre. By changing places everyone could enjoy both visits. JMB

50th Anniversary - Golf
MORE than 40 Old Boys turned up for the golf meeting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Old Ipswichians Golf Society. Held at Ipswich
Golf Club at Purdis Heath on July 5th, the event was won by Matthew Prentice with a stableford score of 39 points playing off his handicap of 14, just pipping Robin Shurety and John Edwards.
Matthew won the annually awarded Granville Haskell Cup and a fine limited-addition print of a watercolour of Felixstowe Ferry donated by the artist and Old Boy Mike Wootton.
The event was kindly subsidised by the Old Ipswichian Club, and chairman William Coe was guest of honor at the presentation dinner.
Please contact Billy Izzard at william.izzard@dailystar.co.uk or 07767764652 for more details of golf fixtures.

30, 35, 40th Reunion at the School
The last weekend in June was a busy weekend for the OI’s. The cricket match against the school was followed by the President’s Barbecue on Friday night. Three re-unions took place the following Saturday morning catering for leavers from 1977, 1972 and 1967. The Reunions were attended by 17 OI’s and their guests with 14 of the attendees coming from the 1977 leavers group. A tour of the School conducted by two prefects from the current Lower Sixth was followed by a very pleasant lunch in the Dining Hall where the party was joined by Dr and Mrs Blatchly and the Headmaster. Lunch gave the attendees a great opportunity to talk and renew old acquaintanceships. The Headmaster gave a brief talk about the school today and the various achievements of the current year. After lunch, Dr Blatchly opened the Archives and the School Museum where a selection of items relevant to the years attending had been prepared. Much had changed at the school over the intervening years. A most enjoyable day marred only by the rather un-seasonal weather.

Cricket v School
On an overcast day the school won the toss and invited the OIs to bat first. Even though the OIs had assembled a relatively strong side that contained six former captains of the school cricket XI, the OI run machine failed.
The OIs were dismissed for one hundred and sixty seven runs in the forty-third over with Neil Parry compiling a useful 59 runs. The last wicket pair between Hilton and Burton also added twenty valuable runs.
The School’s reply fell 20 runs short after a good innings from Hugh Thomas. James Druitt was the most successful OI bowler finishing with four wickets.

Career options
The Old Ipswichian Club recently organised a careers talk for Lower Sixth pupils of Ipswich School.
The session comprised of an hour long talk, given by OI Will Sambrook, followed by lunch and networking.
The talk was certainly very stimulating and got the lower Sixth Formers thinking about which direction they wanted to go once establishing who they were and what they wanted – not an easy task at 17.
It was hoped that this will become an annual event and include an element of careers advice from the wider OI careers network.

'ROARING FORTIES'
Thanks to the efforts of Tony Greengrass and the Developent Office over 25 OIs and their guests came to the 40s Leavers Social in the Holly Road Pavilion on Friday 25 May. An atmosphere of bonhomie prevailed with many meeting old friends from sixty years ago. Distance was no obstacle for some who travelled to see old friends from as far as Hertfordshire. This year's attendance was nearly twice that of last year - a trend to be encouraged for all year groups.A thank you to Mike Fenn for hosting the event, travelling from Kent to do so.

LONDON DINNER IS A CAPITAL EVENT
Over 41 people attended the 2007 London Dinner on Saturday, 19 May, for what proved to be a wonderful occasion. The President, Basil Tenwick (55-67) hosted the event with wit, a quality also possessed by our speaker, Peter Florence (75-82) who showed why, as well as having an international reputation in the world of literature is an acknowledged speech writer.
The Headmaster, Ian Galbraith, brought us up to speed on the developments and achievements at the School, with particular reference to successes on the hockey field and the newly completed Prep School.
All in all, a most enjoyable evening for young and not-so-young OIs.

Gareth Hoskins became the third Old Ipswichian, after John Caudle and Mike Fenn, to reach the quarter-finals of the All England Championships held at Eton 17/18th January. Gareth and his partner Guy Chapman (Old Cholmeleian) were seeded 6th= and reached their expected slot in the quarters where they lost to the 3rd seeds Howard Wiseman and Seb Cooley (Old Olavians) 12-9, 12-6, 12-4.
Peter Boughton and John Caudle conceded the final of the Plate A Pepperpot Trophy due to injury having knocked out two School pairs of Alex Yusaf/Alex Williams and Ed Leach/Oli Watts at the semi and quarter-final stages.
In the Festival James Hicks/Peter Baxter (School) came second in their Pool and so qualified for the quarter-finals of the Festival losing to the ultimate winners. Dave Leach/Annabel Griffiths (School) came 3rd in their Pool losing in the semi-finals of the Plate A. Alex Yusaf and Alex Williams lost in the final of the C Plate to a strong Olavian pair.
All in all a very creditable effort by the O.I.'s but especially by the School pupils.

Another Wonderful Evening
Friday, 24 November 2006
The venue for the ‘Last Friday of the Month’ event in November was moved from the Pavilion to the new Prep School, where a party of nearly 30 OIs and their guests had a most enjoyable time.
Welcome drinks were served from 6.00pm, which were followed by escorted tours of the new Prep building, providing the opportunity to view this wonderful ‘State of the Art’ building in its first term of occupation. The thirst for knowledge engendered by the tours was then slaked by a glass of wine before settling down to an enthralling talk by Dr John Blatchly, past headmaster, about Thomas Cavendish, an OI, who was the second Englishman to circumnavigate the world. The evening was rounded off with a buffet and an opportunity to view the display arranged by John.
Some new faces were present and together with those more familiar, all added up to a memorable occasion.

Great attendance for 'Friends' Quiz night,
24/11 - Sadly the OI committee team cannot report the retention of the cup they won last year. The impact of sickness and in one case mechanical failure - their car, not them - leaving a weakened side, despite the use of tactical substitutes at half-time. (That's our story and we're sticking to it!) The event itself saw a huge turnout, requiring a move to the great school, and as ever Neil Cameron (staff) over-saw proceedings with his usual flair.
Always a fun evening, make sure to pencil in this event to support our sister organisation again next year.

Eton Fives 40th Year Celebratory Dinner
4th November 2006 The O.I. Eton Fives Club has been affiliated to the Eton Fives Association for 40 years. To celebrate the occasion and to mark the Secretaryship of Mike Fenn for the whole of that time he and his wife Athene were guests of honour at the 40th Anniversay Dinner held last evening in Pimlico.
The Dinner was organised by Sue and Simon Woolfries ably assisted by Peter Boughton, John Caudle and others. A wonderful evening of nostalgia with players, partners and friends in an informal occasion with plenty of fun and laughter epitomising what the O.I. Fives Club is all about. Peter Boughton reflected on the past 40 years with responses by Mike and Athene following presentation of a tankard and bouquet of flowers.
Attendees: Athene and Mike Fenn, Sue and Simon Woolfries, Karen and Henry Staunton, John Collett, Peter Boughton, John Caudle, John Levick, Mark Graves, David Cox and girlfriend, Tim and Tom Fletcher, Peter Forrest and Old Edwardians Mr and Mrs Peter Scholey and Courtney Friend

Thomas Cavendish Talk - Friday 24th November 2006
Was Thomas Cavendish, the second British circumnavigator, a pupil under John Dawes at Ipswich School?
Your chance to visit and tour the new Preparatory School in Ivry Street. It has been suggested that the building looks like a liner moored alongside and the decks do make good play areas. As school archivist, John Blatchly has recently established that Thomas Cavendish and Thomas Eldred who in the DESIRE circumnavigated the world in 1586-88 (only Francis Drake did this earlier) were educated at the School. Come and hear something of their schooldays and their adventures on the High Seas.

Successful Reunion for 2005 Leavers
Always a popular reunion for those one year out from the School, this year was no exception, probably with our highest turn out ever. The team were in early, probably due to the promise of free alcohol, with a start time posted of 7.00 pm they were queuing outside from 6.30 pm onwards. Unfortunately the catering levels of our Chairman in terms of Lager were not sufficient (they have not learnt the beauties of drinking bitter) and a run to the local off licence was required.
As well as reminiscing, the amount of electronic signals bouncing from phone to phone as video clips/information was transferred was staggering. Also interesting the way a few OIs had acquired Aussie twangs.
A splendid evening with promises of great support to come and at 10.00 pm they were kicked out to go and invade the town.
Many thanks to Andy Mann for his superb organisation of the event.

The live music was provided by Ed Jewson O.I.(76-87) and The Serious Hat Band.All-in-all a wonderful evening which proved that O.I. There was good turnout of OIs at the Athletics v The School which took part on the Notcutts field on Thursday, 6th July.
There was some excellent competition from both teams throughout the evening with some spectacular heights being reached at the High Jump. A handicap system was in operation as some of the School entrants were in the younger age group and overall the School just managed to get the edge.

Rider Haggard revealed.
Following on from the cricket v the school, and following a delicious tea provided by the school (themed - as all meals that week apparently - on the football teams playing in the world cup that day, Argentina and Germany, thankfully not Ecuador!) former Headmaster Dr John Blatchly joined the throng to reveal the life and times of probably our most famous OI, Henry Rider Haggard. A fascinating and humourous talk, nobody has the breadth of local historical knowledge to be able to set a character into context and bring them to life quite like John. 25 Year Reunion - Saturday 1st July
July 1 2006 will live long in the memory. 11 men brought together by destiny, carrying the hopes of a generation. Blisteringly hot, they were encouraged to drink copious amounts of liquid. Despite some carrying a little more weight than in previous years and others sporting rather unfashionable hairstyles, nonetheless they were full of energy and wonderfully supported by the WAGs (or wives and girlfriends as they were known in former days).
No, this was not the 2006 World Cup but the Old Ipswichian 25th reunion. And whilst the football ended in tears, those gathering at the Pavilion earlier in the day had a splendid time reminiscing and catching up with old friends.
Competition from the football, end of term events, Wimbledon and last minute withdrawals kept the numbers down, and note has been taken to try to organise such reunions in the holidays. But it was a lovely gathering, with a children's entertainer on hand to keep the many youngsters busy. Thanks must go to the School catering staff for the tremendous lunch and to William Coe and the OI Committee for financing the event in full.
And the names of our team? Roger Digby, Roger Flory, Christopher Jones, Simon Rudland, Joe Dick Chan, James Tsang, Robert Gravenor, Charles Brennan, Richard Wilson, Jim Woodcraft and Alistair Dick.

O.I.S Enjoy 1950s Reunion
20 plus OIs who left the school in the 1950s plus partners attended a very nice gathering in the Pavilion at the end of April on a pleasant spring evening. Hosted by Mike Fenn, the event was a tremendous success with some OIs meeting for the first time since leaving School almost 50 years ago. A display of archives relating to the era created a lot of interest as did the breakdown of Terry CracknellÆs Bentley!
A few pictures of the event are now available in our photo gallery.

LONDON DINNER - 2006
The London Dinner, held at the East India Club, on Saturday 22 April 2006 was a case of 'quality rather than quantity' in terms of those attending. Unfortunately only about 30 O.I.s managed to be present, but those who did attend experienced a most enjoyable evening, presided over by the President, Dr Caroline Bealing. Dr John Blatchly, former Headmaster, proposed the toast to the School and the Club, saying that the Club was in good shape providing more events than ever before. He also explained his role at the School as archivist and provided a display of memorabilia. In response the Headmaster, Ian Galbraith, outlined progress at the School and described how it continues to evolve.
The President thanked everyone for their attendance and said how flattered and honoured she was to be President and closed the speeches by describing what it was like to be one of the first girls at the School and how she was the only girl in her classes, often leading to some embarrasing situations!

Russian Reunion in Novgorod - 25th March 2006
The first Novgorod OI dinner, was held in Velikiy, Novgorod. With already twelve students having completed a year of studies at School, the event had been seen as a great opportunity for them to get together, reminisce, and share each otherÆs news. Only two former students from Novgorod failed to attend the reunion, the rest of the party completed by three Sixth Formers currently visiting Novgorod, and some members of staff. Gillian Holt opened the speeches by saying how glad she felt seeing almost all of the Russian OIs together. Then Hanna MacFarlan, a Sixth Former who came to Novgorod Licey on an exchange visit for ten days, gave a short overview of the most memorable events that have happened at School over the past couple of years. Dr Elena Hore, the Russian language assistant at School and the guardian of every Russian who has studied there, said a few words about the value of the programme and its prospects. The speeches were concluded by Graham Papenfus, the School Development Director, who said that the Russian reunion might become a part of a series of such events held around the world. Every attendee was given a DVD with images of Westwood and greetings from the Headmaster, Mr. Cameron and Mr. Godfrey. Many thanks go to Jack Paget and Charlotte Hogarth-Jones who did a superb job putting the DVD together. The event ended with a proposition to hold such reunions, approximately every three or four years. Ilya Mishchenko (years at School: 1998-99)
Attendees were: R. Chandler (VI Form) D. Demidov (01-02) S. Getmanskiy (96-97) V. Golovatskiy (02-03) S. Golovin (99-00) P. Gudzenko (04-05) G. Holt (Staff) Dr E. Hore (Staff) K. Krasnov (93-94)HHHH

O.I.s PIPPED AT THE POST
In an exciting Cross Country event on Saturday (4 March) the O.I.s were narrowly beaten by a team from The Friends of Ipswich School. Altogether there were over 50 runners competing in three separate races as the annual event against the School was combined with the school race against the Royal Hospital School, Norwich School and Greshams School. There was also a very good turnout by the ladies who produced some very good performances. The bitterly cold weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of those taking part. It was unfortunate that the School was unable to put out a senior squad for the event and consequently the shield was not awarded this year. We all look forward to next year's event. A full report giving details of placings will be published in the next "Old Ipswichian" in September.

IPSWICH DINNER PACKS THEM IN!
Over 100 O.I.s and senior pupils attended the 2005 Ipswich Dinner on 17 December (one of the best attended for many years). The average age of those present was noticably lower than usual and was an encouraging sign for the future, providing the formal traditions are not eroded by a small minority! The President, Dr Mark Bailey, hosted the evening in his own inimitable style. The guest speaker was Nigel Farthing (66-73) who entertained the diners with an amusing speech about the School motto. The Headmaster responded by giving an update on recent achievements at the School. Dr John Blatchly provided a display from the Archives and explained the work in the Archive Office. The evening was completed by the President handing over the Badge of Office to the incoming President for 2006, Dr Caroline Bealing (76-78).
More details and photographs will appear in forthcoming O.I. publications.

Mark Graves Cup (Ipswich Tournament)
7th/8th January witnessed the 27th Ipswich Fives Tournament - a great weekend of Fives organised by Peter Boughton and enjoyed by the many O.I.'s, schoolboys, visiting club players and staff who took part.
Those attending the informal dinner held on the Saturday evening in the Pavilion included Fives President John Le Mare and his wife Rosemary and Ann Shortland-Jones, a great supporter of Fives and the School. But for the support for Fives by her late husband Martin, former member of staff, the game at Ipswich would not have survived.
Tournament Results: Semi-finals: S Burnell & A Dunlavey (O.I.'s) beat M R Fenn & P Forrest (O.I.'s) 12-3, 12-5 G Hoskins & D Leach (O.I./School) beat T.S.Fletcher & O Bowditch (O.I.'s) 13-12, 12-3 Final: S Burnell & A Dunlavey beat G Hoskins & D Leach 14-12, 12-2, 12-1
Plate: S Woolfries & A Cameron (O.I.'s) beat P Boughton & J Thorne (O.I./School) 12-7, 12-9

Reunion in Portugal
M R (Mike) Fenn with his wife Athene, and N (Nick) Miller with partner Maggie recently spent five days at the home of Pat and F A R 'Gaucho' Jeffery in Portugal celebrating the the 50th anniversary of their first meeting as boarders in School House - September 1954. Needless to say the port flowed throughout the five days. The high point was an anniversary dinner at the Bussaco Palace Hotel, hunting lodge of the last King of Portugal, when an excellent fifty-one year old port and a twenty-five year bottle of wine were consumed. A photo is available in the photo gallery.
